Annie Moore-First at Ellis Island

Life in post famine Ireland was extremely hard and a constant stream of emigrant continued to make their way to America. Abject poverty and the dream of better fortune encouraged thousands to make the treacherous journey. Annie Moore traveled from Cobh, then known as Queenstown in Co. Cork on the SS Nevada accompanied by her younger brothers, Anthony and Phillip.

They were planning to join their parent who had emigrated two years previously to Brooklyn, New York. They arrived in the new processing station at Ellis Island on January 1, 1892, which was her 15th birthday, to fanfare and festivities. Annie was the first to disembark and as such takes her place in history as the first emigrant ever to be processed on Ellis Island. It is said that she was given a gift of a $10 gold coin, a rich and promising start to a new life in a new country.

Statues of Annie and her two brothers in both Ellis Island and Cobh commemorate this event and have become a symbol of the many Irish who made a similar journey armed with little more than their hopes and dreams. Annie later married, produced a large family and settled in Waco, Texas where she was accidentally struck by a train and killed in 1923.

Wishing you all a Happy 2010!
